About twenty years ago, something happened that changed my life forever.

When I was about 6 year old, I suffered a bad neck injury.  I was doing a flip off a piece of gymnastics equipment and I didn’t quite make it all the way around.  I landed on my head and severely strained my neck.  For about a week after this injury I couldn’t even turn my head.  As time went by the pain decreased but I was left with recurring problems.  Over the next 14 years I suffered from frequent headaches, sore throats, recurring sinus infections and 4-5 bouts of strep throat each year.   At random times when I turned my head I would get a sharp pain in the upper part of my neck.  The pain was a bursting twinge of pain that would shoot up into the back of my head and into my right eye.  This pain is something that would occur every couple of days.  On top of that I felt like I was sick or I was getting sick all the time!  When I was 13 I even had surgery to remove my tonsils and adenoids. My pediatrician was convinced that this would “fix” my problem… unfortunately nothing changed and I just kept getting sick.

Over the next 7 years when my symptoms would flare up, I would go to the medical doctor and I would get a prescription for medication.  It was always the same prescription for antibiotics and decongestants.  Any relief I would get from the medication was always temporary and my symptoms would just keep returning. This went on until I was around twenty years old. I had a stretch where I had gone to my family doctor once a month over a period of six months for the same problems that had plauged me my entire life. My sinuses were constantly congested and I had a sore throat that would not go away.

Every time I saw the doctor the routine was the same. The doctor would do a strep culture, it would come back negative and he would prescribe antibiotics.  After six months and no real improvement I decided to ask my doctor about alternative treatment for my problem.  The last time I saw this doctor my exact words to him were “we need to try something different, this treatment (antibiotics and decongestants) is not making my problem go away”. He listened to me and then responded by giving me the same antibiotics and decongestants again. I was frustrated and disgusted. What happened next changed my life forever.

Chiropractic care was suggested

I thought I would have to live the rest of my life feeling like this…feeling sick all the time. My family was well aware of my problems.  I have a sister that is a year older than me and a brother that is a couple years younger.  I was the sick kid, the one that was always going to the doctor with Strep.  I had a conversation with my sister and she suggested that I come with her to the chiropractor.

My sister had recently been involved in a car accident and was receiving chiropractic treatment for a neck injury. She told me the treatment was really helping, and she was feeling great. I didn’t really know anything about chiropractic but I decided to give it a try. At this point I was desperate and willing to try anything that would give me some relief.

My family was living in Davenport, Iowa at the time and my sister was going to the student clinic at Palmer College of Chiropractic for her treatment. I decided to go with her and give it a try. The student doctor I saw did a thourough examination of me and then took x-rays of my neck. My old neck injury was still visible on the x-rays.  You could see that the curve in my neck was reversed and the bones in the upper part of my neck were rotated.  Shortly after my examination the student doctor gave me an “adjustment” to start the process of correcting the misalignment in my neck. It didn’t hurt at all, it actually felt great and the results were nothing short of amazing.

It was like a switch was turned on in my body. The next day I felt better than I had in years. No headaches, no sinus congestion, no neck pain! I couldn’t wait to get treated again. Over the next couple of months I continued to improve. No more headaches, neck pain, sinus problems, strep throat and NO need for antibiotics. No drugs and no surgery!

Chiropractic Education

Chiropractic worked so well for me that I decided to go to chiropractic school. I went to Palmer College of Chiropractic to earn my D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic) degree.

After chiropractic made such a huge positive change in my life, I knew that I wanted to help people achieve better health and get out of pain with chiropractic care.

I completed my chiropractic eduction at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa in 1994.

I was amazed to learn about how the nervous system is directly linked to every organ and tissue in your body. I learned how injuries and misalignment of the spine can pinch or interfere with normal nervous system function. These misalignment’s can cause pain, affect your ability to fight infection and disease and even cause problems with your internal organs. It all made perfect sense to me that my neck injury had been the source of my headaches, my sore throats, strep infections and sinus problems.

My chiropractic education completely changed the way I viewed health. I realized the body heals itself, and no medication can replace the human bodies natural ability to heal.

I personally continue to get regular chiropractic adjustments as part of my healthy lifestyle. I exercise regularly and maintain a good diet and I recommend that may patients do too. I firmly believe that anyone that is giving you advice about your health should practice what they preach.
